Episode 32 – Periwinkle Skies w/ Ming Doyle June 21, 2010

Posted by Euge in : Episodes , trackback

We’re back! I know we said Rick Remender would be our guest, but due to some last minute complications, we had to reschedule him (to next week!). So Chris & Euge get to sit with the lovely and talented Ming Doyle, artist of The Loneliest Astronauts and whose work you’ve also seen in Marvel’s Girl Comics anthology. It’s an episode about HeroesCon, dream romance, and lovely skies as the crew is back again with the incredible, and all that goodness (sketch above is Ming’s sketch for Chris from HeroesCon, which you can look at here).

Wow! I read Cam Jansen growing up too and am kind of startled to have heard a reference on the podcast.

I loved ‘em so much that I was convinced I had a photographic memory (and would insist to people that I did), even though I very clearly didn’t.

Hey Euge, why travel all the way to Atomic in Baltimore for your comics? There’s that decent shop out in College Park. Or better yet, try Third Eye Comics out in Annapolis, the shop I go to. Biggest damn trade paperback wall I’ve ever seen and has a pretty baller staff. Plus, it’s the only Eisner-nominated shop I know of around the region. So…yeah.

Btw, fucking big ups on the single man. Stellar little number there.

4. Euge - June 21, 2010

Huh. I’ll definitely check out 3rd Eye Comics. I just know that Fantom closed in PCity mall (where I commute), and Big Planet in CPark and Fairfax are just far away to make it not easy for me to make regular trips to.

RETURN OF THE MACK! YES!

Great to have you guys back, and even better to hear that classic track.

6. Phill - June 22, 2010

Man, everybody wants to do a Daily Planet/Daily Bugle story!

7. Ming Doyle - June 22, 2010

Newspaper reporterin’ seemed so sassy and cool when I was growing up! You might almost have to pull a “Superman Returns” fake timeless retro number to make a story like that work now, though.

Basically my unreasonable demand is that I want the Daily Planet bullpen to be like the workroom in “Project Runway” but fraught with mortal and moral peril.

Entertaining, boys and girl…. (as always). Welcome back

It’s totally not an Asian thing – it’s a “time you got to the X-Men” thing; Jubilee hate is about two things;

1) People who came to the X-Men before you did, who’s X-Sweet-Heart was Kitty Pryde, and they don’t get that they were manipulated in the same way you were, and as such Kitty Pryde is awesome and Jubilee is lame.
2) Wesley Crusher factor. Why does that teenager get to hang out with Wolverine, when I am so much cooler than she?

10. Matt Wilson - June 24, 2010

I concur that the shop in College Park is actually pretty good.

11. Euge - June 24, 2010

Please note that when I say shops in DC suck, I don’t necessarily mean the shops in Fairfax or the shops in College Park, which are basically not easily reached by me during the week.

I’m really surprised that Sims liked the Shed story, because I thought it was exactly what Sims hated about comics nowadays–just mindless blood and gore for no real reason, and it pretty much took away everything that made Lizard an interesting character. But hey, whatever strokes your boat.

Also mad props to Ming Doyle–her mini-comics are great, and The Loneliest Astronauts looks really cool, and just bookmarked it. :D

[...] Once again, check out the podcasts War Rocket Ajax for a great time. Their recent interviews of Ming Doyle and Rick Remender left me gasping for air as I drew. Adam WarRock also released a song about Doctor [...]
